EU foreign ministers expressed their condolences to the widow of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny during a ministerial meeting that was held on Monday.
Yulia Navalnaya attended the EU foreign ministers’ gathering in Belgium. The ministers invited her after her husband — a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin — died at a prison on Friday.
Josep Borrell, the EU foreign policy chief, said the ministers listened to Navalnaya’s accounts of anti-government movements in Russia and the Putin administration’s crackdown on opposition figures during the meeting.
After the gathering, Borrell reported that Navalnaya said, “Putin is not Russia. Russia is not Putin.”
Borrell said he wants to support the “brave Russians” who tried to pay tribute to the late opposition leader.
