Israel kept up its heavy assault on Khan Younis, the Gazan city it earlier said it had “encircled”, following an outpouring of grief over the army’s deadliest single day since ground operations in the territory began. The Israeli military said Tuesday that 21 soldiers were killed in a single attack by Palestinian militants.
